Why did my pool turn green after heavy rain?

Heavy rain can expose an algae, circulation, runoff, or metal problem. Use this safety-first sequence to find what changed before choosing a treatment.

Heavy rain can turn a vulnerable pool green by adding debris and runoff, diluting or shifting water balance, and interrupting circulation. Algae is a common explanation, but green water is not a diagnosis: dissolved metals, staining, and storm debris can also create a green cast. Start with visibility, equipment, and a fresh water test before choosing a treatment.

Rain is the trigger; find the failure

The useful question is not only “What color is the water?” Ask what the storm changed: Did runoff enter? Did the pump lose power or prime? Did leaves fill the baskets? Did the waterline rise above normal skimming? Did a fresh test show that pH or free disinfectant moved out of the applicable range?

Check these symptoms first

  • You cannot clearly see a fixed detail on the deepest floor, including a drain cover where present.
  • The water is green and cloudy, or the walls feel slippery.
  • The water is green but clear, with no slippery film.
  • A soil, mulch, lawn, septic, or floodwater path reached the pool.
  • The pump was off, lost prime, or now has weak or bubbly return flow.
  • The skimmer and pump baskets filled with leaves or fine organic debris.
  • Green or brown color is fixed to surfaces rather than suspended in water.

This table narrows the next check; it does not prove a cause. Metals testing, complete water analysis, and equipment inspection may be needed before correction.

Choose the cloudy or clear path

  1. Close the pool if visibility is poor. Nobody should enter water that hides the deep drain, sharp storm debris, or a person in distress.
  2. Separate heavy rain from floodwater. Ordinary rain that fell directly into the pool is not the same as overland runoff, storm surge, sewage backup, or contaminated floodwater. If outside water entered, treat it as a contamination and professional-recovery issue.
  3. Remove reachable debris. Use an appropriate leaf rake or net from a stable position. Do not send branches, glass, roofing fragments, or heavy sediment through the pool vacuum and plumbing.
  4. Verify the equipment is safe and circulating. Do not energize anything that got wet. With safe, dry equipment, check water level, baskets, valve position, pump prime, return flow, and filter pressure against the clean baseline.
  5. Run a fresh water test. Follow an in-date kit’s instructions. Record free disinfectant, pH, and other values appropriate to the system. If the result conflicts with the water’s appearance, verify it instead of adding multiple products.
  6. Observe surfaces. With the pump off and pool closed, brush a small reachable area using the correct brush for the finish. A lifted slippery film supports a different path from a hard stain that does not move.
  7. Restore the documented operating routine. Clean the filter only as its manual directs. After normal flow and credible readings return, follow the sanitizer label or a qualified operator’s advice and reassess.

What each observation points to

Organic load exceeded the pool’s remaining protection

Leaves, soil, pollen, and other material add demand and can clog the circulation path. The CDC notes that dirt can reduce chlorine concentration; the Florida operator manual also treats debris, circulation faults, and contamination as practical water-quality loads. If water balance or circulation was already marginal, the storm can make the problem visible quickly.

Rain shifted water balance

Rain and makeup water can change pH and dilute the pool. The direction and size of the change depend on the source water, pool volume, prior readings, overflow, and runoff. Measure rather than assuming every storm lowers or raises the same value.

Circulation stopped or became restricted

A power outage, low or high waterline, leaf-filled basket, blocked skimmer, or air leak can reduce filtration. If the pump is not full of water, stop and use the pump priming diagnostic. If returns show persistent bubbles, trace the suction-side air path.

Runoff introduced unknown contamination

Floodwater and overland runoff can carry sewage, bacteria, unknown chemical contamination, and sharp debris. A backyard water-test kit cannot rule out every hazard. Keep the pool closed and seek local public-health and pool-service guidance.

Metals or staining changed the color

Iron, copper, manganese, and corrosion products can discolor water or surfaces. Do not assume that every green pool needs more sanitizer. A complete test and the source of new water or corrosion matter before a metal-specific correction.

Do not turn color into a dose

  • Do not swim until visibility, equipment operation, and water readings are safe.
  • Do not mix products or add several “green pool” remedies at once.
  • Do not treat total chlorine, free chlorine, and product-label instructions as interchangeable.
  • Do not drain a storm-affected in-ground pool without site-specific professional advice; groundwater pressure can damage a shell.
  • Do not turn on submerged or wet pumps, lights, controls, or outlets.
  • Do not put a robotic cleaner into water with unsafe chemistry, hidden storm debris, or unknown flood contamination.
