Choose a pool-filter type by hydraulic sizing, the cleaning workflow you will actually perform, local wastewater rules, media handling, service access, and exact-model parts support. Sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters use different media and maintenance paths. No type is universally best, and a generic micron ranking is not a safe sizing method.

The short recommendation

Choose sand when a model-sized backwash workflow and lawful discharge route suit the property. Choose cartridge when avoiding routine backwash matters and you can remove, rinse, inspect and store exact elements. Choose DE when the exact system’s media coating/recharging, dust precautions, waste handling and more involved service routine are acceptable. Size all three from the system, not the category.

Sand

  • You prefer a media bed serviced mainly by a valve-controlled backwash/rinse process.
  • The plumbing, pump and waste route support the exact backwash flow.
  • Local rules permit the intended discharge and water use is acceptable.

Cartridge

All three are pressure vessels. Pump off is not enough: follow the exact shutdown/air-relief procedure and verify zero pressure before opening.

Do not buy from a universal micron chart

Manufacturers publish capture examples for particular products or families, but media, element construction, flow, loading and test conditions matter. A category number copied into a buying table can make a model perform better on paper than its current documentation establishes. Hydropolis records a capture claim only when the exact model/source supports it, with the test context where available.

Water clarity also depends on circulation, sanitizer/pH management, debris removal and whether the filter is correctly sized and maintained. A finer headline cannot repair bypass, torn elements, incorrect media, a valve fault or poor circulation.

Hydraulic sizing comes before filter type

  1. Document pool volume and use. Use measured geometry in the Pool Volume Calculator; do not treat an estimated volume as a final equipment schedule.
  2. Map installed plumbing and equipment. Pipe, valves, heater, sanitizer, water features, elevation and pump curve affect the operating point.
  3. Verify the filter’s rated limits and area. Use the exact current datasheet/manual, including maximum operating pressure and design flow information.
  4. Verify cleaning flow and waste route. A sand or DE filter may need a particular backwash flow that the pump/plumbing and lawful discharge route must support.

Maintenance and ownership cost

Compare more than the vessel purchase. Build an annual scenario from the exact system:

  • Water and discharge: backwash volume/frequency, permitted destination, rinse water and local wastewater charges or restrictions.
  • Media/elements: sand or approved alternative, complete cartridge sets, DE replenishment, and model-specific seals/parts.
  • Labor: valve operation and discharge setup; cartridge lifting/rinsing; DE measuring, PPE, cleaning and recoating.
  • Energy: normal filtration at the verified operating point plus any backwash/rinse run; do not assume a filter category determines pump energy by itself.
  • Service: vessel inspections, gauge/air-relief care, internal-part access, media removal and professional labor.
  • Downtime: regional availability of exact elements, grids, laterals, manifolds, valves and seals.

Safety and local-rule gates

  • Never loosen a clamp, lid, gauge, air-relief assembly, valve, drain plug or fitting while pressurized.
  • Turn the pump off before moving a multiport valve and follow the exact position/sequence.
  • Do not discharge backwash or cleaning waste until the destination is lawful and safe for the site.
  • DE is a fine powder. Follow the current manual and safety data for handling, dust control and respiratory protection; do not sweep it into air or improvise disposal.
  • Do not mix cleaning chemicals or reproduce generic acid-cleaning recipes. Oil and mineral deposits require different, ordered handling under the exact guide.

Replacement parts and product roles

The assembled filter is complete equipment. Cartridges, grids, manifolds, laterals, underdrains, standpipes, valves, gauges, relief assemblies, clamps and seals are exact-model replacement or installation parts. Sand and DE are consumables with an exact specification. PPE and approved cleaning tools are maintenance equipment. Similar dimensions or a family name do not establish compatibility.

For current symptoms, use sand returning from the filter, short cartridge cycles, or low filter pressure before replacing the architecture.
