A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. Its salt chlorine generator uses electricity to produce chlorine from dissolved salt. “Traditional chlorine” usually means adding an EPA-registered chlorine product manually or through a feeder. Choose between production and handling systems—not between chlorine and no chlorine.
Both approaches still require reliable testing, pH control, circulation, filtration, swimmer hygiene, and action under the exact product/equipment instructions. A generator does not sense every contamination event or guarantee a residual. A tablet, liquid, or granular product does not manage itself because it is familiar.

Who each approach tends to suit
A generator is a stronger candidate when the pool is permanently installed and compatible, the owner wants on-site production, electrical/plumbing installation and replacement-cell cost are acceptable, and service exists for the exact system. Size the cell for the real pool and operating conditions; do not assume its model number equals a universal pool capacity.
Added product or a feeder is a stronger candidate when the owner can safely store and handle the exact formulation, wants a simpler equipment pad, needs a delivery method supported by the product label, and accepts ongoing product handling/inventory. A feeder is not universal: adding another chemical or formulation to residue in a feeder can create a fire, explosion, or toxic-gas hazard.
Pause the decision when the pool’s material compatibility, volume, source-water metals, electrical/bonding condition, drainage rules, or local chemical-storage requirements are unknown. Public or commercial pools also operate under local codes and trained-operator requirements that a residential comparison cannot replace.

Maintenance and ownership cost
For a generator, compare installed cell/power/control/plumbing/electrical cost, electricity, salt and test supplies, inspections/cleaning permitted by the manual, replacement-cell and control-part cost, and downtime support. For added chlorine, compare chemical consumption under the same pool/use conditions, feeder or dosing equipment, test supplies, storage infrastructure, handling time, and delivery availability. Do not assume a universal cell life, annual chemical bill, or payback period.
Parts availability and exact identity
A salt cell, flow switch, power center, cable, union, sensor, and control board are replacement parts. A feeder lid, o-ring, valve, tube, pump head, and controller probe are also replacement parts. Match manufacturer, model, generation, output class, voltage/region, plumbing, firmware/control compatibility, and part number. A physically fitting cell or lid is not enough evidence.
