A robotic cleaner that repeatedly sticks on a drain or step is usually exposing a geometry, suction, setup, or coverage mismatch—not giving permission to alter a safety fitting. Stop and retrieve the cleaner, document the exact obstacle and circulation state, confirm what the model promises, and use only the remedy in its manual. Never remove or improvise a drain cover.

The drain remains a safety system

CPSC drain-cover rules address entrapment performance and certification. A cleaner inconvenience does not override that purpose. If a cover is loose, missing, damaged, recalled, unmarked, or uncertain, keep people out of the pool and have the system inspected by a qualified professional.

Symptoms to record

  • The robot rests on the drain while tracks or wheels spin without floor contact.
  • The same drain is passable when the circulation pump is normally off but not when it runs.
  • The robot enters beneath a step, ladder, bench, or overhang and cannot turn out.
  • A floating cable becomes taut, loops around a feature, or pulls the cleaner into the same approach.
  • The filter is loaded or a wheel/track/brush is jammed, reducing escape ability.
  • The drain cover is loose, cracked, missing fasteners, unmarked, or visibly damaged.
  • The exact manual says steps or swimouts are outside the cleaner’s intended automatic coverage.

Use this safe check order

  1. Remove swimmers and stop both hazards. Shut down and disconnect the cleaner as its manual directs. If a drain cover appears unsafe, also keep the circulation system off until a qualified professional assesses it.
  2. Retrieve by the approved method. Use the handle, hook, or waterline retrieval system. Never pull a cleaner by its power cable and never reach toward active suction.
  3. Identify the exact repeat point. Record model/revision, pool feature, dimensions, water depth, drain-cover profile, mode, start position, cable amount, filter load, and circulation state.
  4. Confirm the coverage boundary. Wall coverage does not imply steps, swimouts, benches, shelves, or every drain profile. Pentair’s Prowler 820/830 manual explicitly says those models were not designed to clean steps or swimouts automatically.
  5. Clean owner-serviceable paths. With power isolated, empty and correctly reseat the filter, then inspect the allowed brush, track/wheel, inlet, and cable for debris or damage.
  6. Check the exact manual for an approved remedy. The Prowler 910 manual discusses a drain-cover ring; the TigerShark manual identifies its own high-velocity inlet as useful on a raised main drain. Neither instruction establishes cross-model compatibility.
  7. Escalate drain or plumbing changes. CPSC’s recall FAQ says replacement or retrofit work should be performed by a qualified professional. Preserve a compliant, correctly rated, correctly installed cover and the designed anti-entrapment system.

Likely causes in practical order

The feature is outside the promised coverage

Steps and shallow shelves can be too narrow, too shallow, or shaped so a robot enters but cannot turn. Treat manual brushing as the fallback unless the exact model has explicit evidence for that feature. Compare promises in the coverage guide.

The cleaner high-centers on raised geometry

A domed or raised cover can lift the robot so its drive surfaces lose traction. That is a geometry observation, not evidence the cover is defective. An exact manufacturer accessory may alter how its compatible cleaner travels over the feature, but a generic “drain ramp” is not automatically safe or compatible.

Active suction changes the interaction

Some cleaner manuals recommend operating the robot while the pool filter/pump is off; others have different instructions. If sticking only occurs during normal circulation, give that evidence to the pool professional. Do not change main-drain valves, flow balance, or anti-entrapment equipment on your own.

Setup or drive condition reduces escape ability

Too much or too little floating cable, a poor start/power-supply position, a loaded filter, or debris around a track or wheel can make a marginal obstacle repeatable. Follow only owner-serviceable steps in the exact manual; sealed drive faults belong with authorized service.

Do not improvise around a drain

  • Do not remove a drain cover, even for one cleaner cycle.
  • Do not install a marketplace cover, ramp, clip, or fastener without exact rating, fit, instructions, and qualified review.
  • Do not attach foam, weights, zip ties, fins, or guards to the cleaner.
  • Do not close or rebalance suction valves without understanding the pool’s hydraulic and anti-entrapment design.
  • Do not operate the cleaner with swimmers or reach near an active suction fitting.
  • Do not assume app “obstacle avoidance” guarantees clearance over every drain or step.

Match obstacles before purchasing equipment

Drain bridges/inlets are accessories, drive parts are replacement parts, and the robot is complete equipment. A dynamic product module may show only currently usable, confirmed Tier A relationships; it must not convert a generic accessory into a compatible remedy. Stop and call a professional

Keep the pool closed and call a qualified pool professional for a loose, missing, damaged, recalled, unmarked, or uncertain drain cover; a cleaner pinned by strong suction; any proposed drain, valve, plumbing, or anti-entrapment change; or a trapped unit that cannot be safely retrieved. Use authorized cleaner service for cable, battery, power-supply, or drive damage.
