Pool water is clear but the walls feel slippery

Clear water with slippery walls is not a normal “looks fine” condition. Treat it as an unresolved sanitation and slip hazard: keep swimmers out, verify free disinfectant and pH, map where the film is, brush a representative area with a surface-safe tool, and inspect circulation and filtration. Early algae or slime is a practical first suspicion, but oils, residue, and surface deterioration can feel similar.

Clarity describes the water column, not the wall

A clear view to the floor is important, but it does not tell you whether a film is growing on steps, whether disinfectant and pH are in their applicable ranges, or whether a slick surface can cause a fall. Check the wall as its own surface.

Symptoms that change the urgency

  • Steps, benches, ladders, or the shallow floor are slick enough to affect footing.
  • A film returns within hours or days after brushing.
  • Free chlorine, pH, or cyanuric-acid context is unknown, out of range, or based on an expired test.
  • The film concentrates behind a ladder, under a ledge, or on one low-flow wall.
  • The pump lost prime, returns weakened, baskets filled, or filter pressure changed.
  • A wall-climbing robot now slips, falls, or avoids a wall it previously climbed.
  • The finish is rough, blistered, peeling, stained, or soft rather than simply slick.

What to test first

  1. Close the pool. A slippery step or wall is a fall hazard, and clear water does not verify sanitation. Keep children and pets out while the cause is unresolved.
  2. Map the film. Note whether it covers the whole pool, only shaded areas, the waterline, seams, steps, or a single wall. Photograph the area in consistent light.
  3. Run a fresh water test. CDC recommends pH 7.0–7.8 and at least 1 ppm chlorine for residential pools, or at least 2 ppm when cyanuric acid/stabilized chlorine is used. Follow the exact test and treatment labels; these minimum references do not supply a corrective dose or upper limit.
  4. Brush a small representative patch. Use the finish maker’s approved brush. Record whether the slick feel lifts, a plume appears, staining stays fixed, or the surface itself changes.
  5. Inspect the circulation path. Check normal prime, baskets, return flow, valve positions, and filter condition without opening pressurized equipment. A film confined to one zone can reveal missed mechanical cleaning or weak local movement.
  6. Clean the full affected surface and capture the release. Brush and vacuum/filter as the pool and equipment manuals permit. Recheck filter pressure and service needs as material loads the system.
  7. Retest before reopening. The film should be resolved, visibility should remain clear, equipment should operate normally, and water readings must be within the exact product and local operating limits.

Likely causes in practical order

An early surface slime or algae layer

The Florida public-pool operator manual treats severe algae that causes slippery surfaces as an unsafe condition. CDC’s operating guidance likewise pairs disinfectant and pH control with scrubbing slime layers and maintaining recirculation. For a backyard pool, use those as safety and systems principles while the exact product label and local rules control treatment.

A circulation or cleaning blind spot

Film that starts behind a ladder, below a ledge, or in a corner may be escaping routine brushing or receiving less water movement. Do not improvise valve or drain changes. Verify the pool’s intended return setup and include the missed surface in a documented maintenance route.

Oil, sunscreen, or waterline residue

A localized greasy waterline band after heavy use can follow a different cleaning path from broad underwater slime. Use a cleaner approved for the finish and keep incompatible chemicals out of the pool. If the residue is unknown, seek professional identification.

A surface or coating problem

A failing coating, softened liner, polished scale, or deteriorating finish can change texture. Stop aggressive brushing or acid treatment if the surface is peeling, discolored, soft, or otherwise damaged. That is a surface inspection, not a water-only correction.

Why a wall-climbing cleaner may expose the problem

Polaris identifies a full canister and slippery walls as model-specific checks when a 7240 Sport stops climbing. Other manuals point to filter load or worn brushes. A robot losing traction can therefore be a useful observation, but it is not a chemistry test. Verify that the exact model supports wall coverage, then use the robotic wall-climbing diagnostic.

Remove the cleaner while water conditions are unresolved. A robotic cleaner is complete equipment with a debris filter; it does not sanitize water. Static cleaner or chemical recommendations are omitted until the cause, pool surface, model, and live product roles are confirmed.

  • Do not let anyone swim or walk on slick steps while the condition is unresolved.
  • Do not assume clear water or a strong odor means sanitizer is correct.
  • Do not use a metal brush, abrasive pad, acid wash, or solvent without exact surface approval.
  • Do not add several treatments together or turn the robot’s behavior into a dose.
  • Do not run a cleaner with swimmers or leave it in water outside its manual’s chemistry limits.

Get qualified help for any fall or injury, widespread or rapidly returning film, unsafe visibility, unknown chemical residue, readings that cannot be verified, failing sanitation/circulation equipment, material returning through the jets, or a damaged liner/coating/plaster surface. Do not reopen until the hazard and the applicable water limits are resolved.
