Pool pump will not prime: what to check first

Stop dry running and work through the water source, valves, baskets, strainer pot, lid seal, and suction path using the exact pump manual.

If a pool pump will not prime, stop it rather than letting it run dry. Check the water level, suction-valve position, skimmer and pump baskets, water in the strainer pot, and the lid seal before suspecting the motor. If one attempt made exactly as the model manual directs does not establish steady flow within the manual’s limit, switch the pump off and find the air leak, restriction, or equipment fault.

Prime or stop?

No water available to the pump? Correct the waterline, valve, or blockage with power off. Water path available and pot filled per the manual? Make one monitored priming attempt. No solid water flow, abnormal heat, noise, leak, or repeated alarm? Stop. Do not extend the attempt because a generic article gives a longer time than the exact pump manual.

Confirm what “will not prime” looks like

  • The strainer pot remains empty or partly full while the motor runs.
  • Water surges into the pot, falls away, and never becomes steady.
  • A large air pocket remains under the clear lid.
  • Return jets produce little water or repeated bursts of air.
  • The pump reports a priming alarm or stops its automatic attempt.
  • The problem began after the pump lid, filter, valve, cleaner hose, or plumbing was opened.
  • The pool water is below the normal skimmer operating level or the skimmer forms a vortex.

If the basket is full of water and returns are steady but flow seems weak, that is a low-flow diagnosis rather than a complete failure to prime. A dirty basket, dirty filter, blocked impeller, restricted line, or low speed may be involved.

Use the prime-or-stop sequence

  1. Stop the pump and make restart impossible. Isolate power so a timer or automation system cannot restart it, stand clear, and allow the strainer pot to cool. A failed prime can leave scalding water under vapor pressure. Follow the exact pump and filter manuals before operating an air relief or opening any lid, plug, clamp, or union.
  2. Identify the exact pump after shutdown. From a safe, intact label, record brand, complete model, total horsepower or rating-plate data, voltage, serial/revision, and controller. Download the matching manufacturer manual before moving a valve or setting.
  3. Confirm zero pressure using the manuals. Use the specified shutdown and air-relief procedure only after the equipment has cooled. Never loosen a filter clamp, lid, plug, or union while the system is pressurized.
  4. Check the pool waterline. The skimmer must receive water without drawing a vortex of air. Also check that a stuck skimmer weir is not restricting entry.
  5. Check the suction path. Confirm the required suction valves are open and winterizing plugs or temporary closures have been removed. If the problem started after valve work, compare the current position with the documented normal position.
  6. Empty the skimmer and pump baskets. With power isolated and pressure relieved, remove material that is blocking water. Reinstall baskets in the correct orientation.
  7. Inspect the lid and seal. Clean the lid’s sealing surfaces and check the O-ring for absence, twists, cracks, flattening, or debris. Use only the lubricant and method the exact manual permits. Hand-tighten where the manual says hand-tight; tools can distort or damage a lid.
  8. Fill and start exactly as the manual directs. Some pumps above the waterline require the strainer pot to be filled; some controllers have a priming speed and time. Open the filter air relief only as the manufacturer directs and stand clear.
  9. Stop if prime does not establish. A failed manual-compliant attempt points to a suction leak, restriction, excessive lift, impeller fault, or other service issue. Repeated dry attempts are not a diagnostic method.

What about bubbles at the return jets?

Persistent bubbles and an unstable pump basket support an air-entry problem. A low waterline, clogged basket, loose or damaged lid seal, suction-cleaner hose leak, union seal, or suction-pipe leak may be involved. What a failed prime never justifies

  • Do not let the pump run dry while you walk away to search for an answer.
  • Do not open a pump, filter, plug, union, or valve under pressure.
  • Do not use compressed air to look for a leak in pool circulation equipment.
  • Do not reach into the pump or impeller area while power could be restored by a timer or automation system.
  • Do not smear an unspecified sealant or lubricant on an O-ring.

After normal flow returns

Record the clean filter pressure, normal pump speed, observed flow if a reliable meter is installed, and the water level that avoids skimmer air. The stop side of the decision

Call a qualified pool professional for repeated loss of prime, a suspected underground suction leak, a cracked housing or pipe, an inaccessible blockage, a damaged impeller, or a priming failure after the accessible manual checks. Use a licensed electrician for wet electrical equipment, damaged wiring, a breaker that retrips, or any uncertainty about electrical isolation. Stop immediately for abnormal heat, burning odor, smoke, or a leaking motor/drive area.
