Do not add another treatment just because the pool is cloudy after shock. First check whether the water is clear enough to see a fixed detail on the deepest floor, including a drain cover where present, then verify the test result, circulation, and filter condition. Cloudiness can be suspended material moving toward the filter, but it can also point to a testing error, restricted flow, filter bypass, or a water-balance problem.
Keep swimmers out when clarity is poor
If you cannot see a fixed reference on the deepest floor, including a drain cover where present, close the pool. Poor visibility can hide a person in distress, a loose drain cover, or sharp debris. Do not use “it is probably dead algae” as a reason to swim before visibility, equipment operation, disinfectant, and pH are back within the applicable safe ranges.
Recognize the pattern before changing anything
- Uniform white or gray haze: suspended particles, a chemistry-related precipitate, or fine material the filter has not yet captured are plausible.
- Green tint or slippery surfaces: active or recently disturbed biological growth remains plausible; a single chlorine reading does not settle the question.
- Weak return flow: check circulation before waiting for the filter to clear the water.
- Air under the clear pump lid or at the return jets: a suction-side air leak may be reducing flow. Use the air-bubbles diagnostic.
- Filter pressure far from its clean baseline: a loaded filter, blocked path, air problem, or bypass fault needs attention according to the exact filter manual.
- An implausible test result: recent treatment can interfere with some methods. The CDC notes that very high chlorine can bleach a DPD test and that test instructions matter.

Work across the four test lanes
- Confirm visibility and isolate hazards. Keep swimmers out. Remove reachable surface debris with a net from a safe position. If electrical equipment is wet or the pool received floodwater, stop and use the major-storm recovery sequence.
- Retest; do not simply repeat the previous reading. Take a fresh sample away from a return fitting. Follow the kit’s order, timing, and range. Check the product instructions for known interferences after the treatment used.
- Prove normal circulation. Look for a stable, water-filled pump basket and steady returns. If the pump will not establish flow, follow the pump-will-not-prime guide rather than running it dry.
- Compare filter pressure with the clean baseline. Follow the exact sand, cartridge, or DE filter manual. Turn off power and release pressure before any permitted service. Never open a pressurized filter.
- Inspect surfaces. Brush a small accessible area with an appropriate pool brush. A slippery film or material that lifts from the wall changes the diagnosis; hard, fixed discoloration may need a stain or scale assessment instead.
- Give a verified system time to work. Once flow, filter condition, and water readings are credible, operate the system according to its manual and local guidance. Recheck clarity and pressure rather than relying on a fixed internet timetable.
How the four lanes narrow the cause
The reading is not telling the whole story
Water-test reagents have limits. The CDC advises following the test maker’s directions and notes that unusually high chlorine can produce a falsely low or zero DPD result. The Model Aquatic Health Code annex also describes interference from some non-chlorine shock products. If the number conflicts with the pool’s appearance or the test’s range, verify it with an appropriate method or a qualified pool professional.
Fine material is still suspended
Treatment and brushing can leave small particles in circulation. That does not prove the water is safe, and it does not prove more product is needed. It does make filter operation, filter-media condition, and enough circulation time the next checks.
Flow is restricted or air-bound
A low waterline, clogged skimmer or pump basket, wrong valve position, suction leak, or unprimed pump can reduce the water reaching the filter. Correct the mechanical problem before estimating runtime or energy cost.
The filter is loaded, damaged, or bypassing
A dirty filter can reduce flow; a damaged element, misplaced valve, missing media, or internal fault can let material return to the pool. Filter type and model matter. Use the manual and the clean-pressure record, not a universal backwash or cleaning number. If the gauge rose unexpectedly, follow the high filter-pressure sequence.
Water balance caused precipitation
High pH, calcium conditions, and incompatible or excessive product additions can create haze. That is another reason not to stack treatments. Record what was added, when it was added, and the pool’s actual volume, then ask a qualified professional to interpret a complete test if the cause remains unclear.
Do not reset the diagnosis
- Do not repeat shock automatically or mix products.
- Do not swim when the deepest drain or floor reference is not clearly visible.
- Do not run a pump that will not prime or has an abnormal dry, grinding, or overheating sound.
- Do not open, loosen, or strike a filter while it is pressurized.
- Do not treat a test strip, photometer, or DPD result as infallible outside its stated range.
- Do not buy replacement media from appearance alone. Match the filter model, revision, and manufacturer part information.

Call a qualified pool professional when the drain remains obscured, the pool received floodwater or possible sewage, electrical equipment got wet, the filter is damaged or will not hold normal pressure, the pump repeatedly loses prime, the color may be metal-related, or the water does not improve after testing, normal flow, and model-correct filtration have been verified. Bring a list of recent treatments, test readings, pool volume, filter pressure trend, and exact equipment models.
