Symptoms to record
- Fine sand or silt lies in low spots after larger leaves are collected.
- A visible plume follows the cleaner’s turns or brush.
- The filter contains coarse debris but little of the fine material.
- A filter panel, bag, basket, seal, latch, or bottom lid is damaged or mis-seated.
- The cleaner slows, climbs less, or reports a blockage as the cycle continues.
- The same material appears to return from pool jets, not from the cleaner.
- The “debris” developed after shock, scaling, construction, rain, or an algae episode.
Use this check order
- Check visibility and close the pool if needed. A running robot is not evidence of safe water. If the deepest fixed floor detail is unclear, stop swimming and diagnose the water/filter system.
- Identify the material as an observation. Record color, feel without bare-hand exposure to unknown material, settling time, location, and what preceded it. Do not name algae, pollen, scale, or sand from appearance alone.
- Verify the exact filter. Match filter part number, media description, orientation, seals, latches, and model/revision to the manual. A coarse basket, “fine” panel, and optional ultra-fine insert are different parts, not synonyms.
- Clean and inspect it. Follow the manual’s rinse/cleaning method. Look for tears, warped frames, open seams, missing panels, and a bottom lid that is not locked. Replace only exact compatible parts.
- Inspect the flow path. With power isolated, check only the inlet, brushes, tracks/wheels, and impeller access the manual permits. Polaris notes that hair or fine debris can jam a propeller path even when a canister looks clean.
- Run the patch test. Use a clean filter and the correct mode. Observe whether debris enters the cleaner, leaks back, or suspends. Stop after one useful observation rather than repeatedly redistributing the same material.
- Check the main pool system. If debris returns through jets or stays suspended, inspect filter pressure, media/element integrity, valve positions, and water readings. Do not open pressurized equipment.

The filter media does not match the debris
Maytronics lists a fine top-access filter for the exact Nautilus CC. Hayward’s TigerShark manual describes a model-specific high-velocity inlet for fine or heavy debris. These examples show what must be verified: exact media and exact accessory. They do not establish a universal micron size or cross-model upgrade.
The filter is loaded, leaking, or assembled incorrectly
A loaded filter can reduce suction; a damaged or poorly seated filter can let captured material return. Inspect the entire seal path, not only whether the basket contains leaves. If the cleaner also stops climbing, use the wall-climbing sequence.
The intake or impeller path is restricted
Hair, string, grit, and leaf stems can reduce flow or drive while the unit still appears to run. Owner access varies. Do not follow a support article for a different Polaris, Dolphin, Hayward, Aiper, Beatbot, or Pentair platform; use the exact manual.
The material is not a settled-floor job
Suspended algae, treatment precipitate, dust entering continuously, or main-filter bypass can exceed the robot’s role. CDC’s residential guidance still makes free disinfectant and pH part of water safety. Do not convert a debris problem into a chemical guess.

Get qualified help for unsafe visibility, suspected algae or chemical precipitation, debris returning through pool returns, a damaged filter housing, a sealed-unit error, water in electrical parts, or fine material that persists after one clean-filter patch test and a verified main-filter check.
