Brown or metal-looking pool stains

A brown, rust, black, or metallic-looking mark is not enough to identify iron, copper, manganese, algae, scale, corrosion, or a damaged finish. First decide whether the discoloration is in the water or attached to a surface, preserve the pattern and event history, and test the pool and source water before choosing a treatment.

Color shortcuts are tempting: brown means iron, green means copper, black means manganese. Real pools are less tidy. Leaves can leave organic marks. A corroding screw can make a local rust trail. Mineral scale can trap dirt. A plaster variation can look like a deposit. Suspended metal can color water, while precipitated material can plate onto a finish. Even official equipment manuals treat “metals present” as something to test and escalate, not something to infer from a photograph.

Build an evidence packet

  1. Photograph the pattern. Include a wide view, a close view, a reference object for scale, the waterline, fittings, and any nearby metal. Repeat in similar daylight if the color changes with shadows.
  2. Describe the surface. Record plaster/aggregate, fiberglass, vinyl, tile, paint, or unknown; its age; recent construction; and the finish maker’s care limits.
  3. Reconstruct inputs. Note fill water, rain, fertilizer or soil runoff, salt, every treatment product, heater or equipment work, and any object that sat on the surface.
  4. Test current water correctly. Verify disinfectant and pH, then obtain reliable tests for relevant metals and balance parameters. If the source is a well or recent refill, test source water separately.
  5. Inspect equipment without disassembly. Look for visible corrosion, leaks, debris, or damaged fittings. Shut down and refer electrical, heater, bonded-metal, or sealed-component concerns to a qualified professional.
  6. Preserve warranty options. Contact the finish builder or manufacturer before spot chemicals, sanding, pressure washing, draining, or aggressive brushing.

Why pH belongs in the investigation

CDC explains that low-pH pool water can be corrosive to pipes and that high pH reduces chlorine effectiveness. That makes the pH history relevant to equipment and sanitation, but it still does not assign the stain to a metal. Pentair’s current salt-chlorine-generator guidance says copper, iron, and manganese can stain water-contact surfaces and calls for testing and professional advice when metals are present.

Use those facts narrowly. A low reading does not prove that a heater exchanged copper into the pool. A brown mark does not prove iron came from a well. A normal reading today does not reconstruct months of operation. The evidence packet should contain current readings, any logs, and service dates so a qualified reviewer can separate a transient event from an ongoing source.

Avoid destructive spot tests

Do not place chlorine tablets, dry acid, granular treatment, household rust remover, vitamin tablets, magnets, abrasives, or an unknown “stain test” directly on the finish. A visible reaction may damage or bleach the surface and still fail to identify the original material. Never mix stain products, sanitizers, or acids. Follow the exact product label and finish instructions, and use a professional when the stain is broad, recurring, on a new finish, near metal equipment, or paired with corrosion.

Choose the remedy only after the source is bounded

A treatment that changes the visible mark without controlling its source is not a complete remedy. Ask four separate questions: what is on or in the surface, what placed it there, what water condition allowed it to remain, and what the finish/equipment maker permits. A lab or experienced pool professional may need to test metals, inspect the source, and plan removal. If the entire water body is green while a chlorine reading appears high, follow the green-water verification sequence. Evidence and method
