When algae keeps returning, do not assume it needs a stronger version of the last treatment. Recurrence usually means one part of the control system remains unverified: free disinfectant and pH, complete brushing and removal, circulation through the affected area, filter service, debris load, or the exact product label. Map where and when it returns before treating again.
Treat recurrence as a failed handoff
Sanitizer, brushing, circulation, and filtration hand work to one another. A product can contact water without removing a film from a shaded seam; brushing can release material that a loaded filter never captures; a clean filter cannot correct an unreliable water test. Find the handoff that failed.

Recognizable signs the previous cycle was incomplete
- Green or slippery material remains in corners, behind ladders, under steps, around fittings, or at the waterline.
- The pool improved briefly but the same area changed first.
- Filter pressure rose sharply, return flow fell, or baskets filled during cleanup.
- No one recorded free chlorine separately from total chlorine, pH, or cyanuric-acid use.
- The product called “shock” was not checked for an EPA-registered sanitizer or algicide claim.
- Brushing stopped when the water looked better, or released material was never vacuumed/captured.
- Leaves, pollen, runoff, or heavy bather use continued while the pool recovered.
Run one complete diagnostic cycle
- Close the pool when the surface or visibility is unsafe. Keep swimmers out if the walls or steps are slippery, a fixed detail on the deepest floor is not clear, or readings are outside the applicable label and local range.
- Record the exact recurrence. Photograph or sketch affected zones. Note time since treatment, rain, use, water additions, debris, pump schedule, filter pressure, and every product added.
- Verify the water test. Use an in-date method exactly as directed. CDC recommends pH 7.0–7.8 and at least 1 ppm chlorine in a residential pool, or at least 2 ppm when cyanuric acid/stabilized chlorine is used. Those routine minimums do not define a recovery dose, and upper limits come from the product label and applicable local rules.
- Confirm what the product actually does. EPA distinguishes registered sanitizer/algicide claims from products that only oxidize non-living material or improve clarity. Do not expect an oxidizer without an algicide claim to control algae.
- Remove the surface film. Use a brush and vacuum method approved for the pool finish. Include seams, corners, steps, ladders, lights, fittings, and the waterline. Avoid damaging vinyl, coatings, grout, or fittings.
- Follow the debris path. Empty baskets, inspect normal prime and return flow, and service the filter by its manual when the pressure or condition calls for it. Do not open a pressurized filter or improvise filter media.
- Recheck the same locations. Use the same light and observation points after the label-led process and normal filtration. If the same zone returns first, investigate local flow, inaccessible film, or a surface/equipment problem rather than repeating a blind pool-wide action.
Likely failure points, in practical order
The film was not completely loosened and removed
Public-pool operating guidance from CDC and Georgia combines disinfection with surface scrubbing, vacuuming, circulation, and filtration. The same systems principle is useful at home: a treatment addition is not the whole cleanup. Use surface-compatible tools and protect suction fittings and finishes.
A low-flow zone keeps reseeding the visible problem
Recurrence behind a ladder, beneath a ledge, or on one wall can expose poor local mixing or skipped brushing. Confirm that return fittings and valves are in their intended positions, but do not alter hydraulics or drain settings without the equipment documentation or a qualified service professional.
The filter is loaded, misassembled, or bypassing debris
Cleanup can load a filter quickly. Compare pressure with the system’s known clean baseline and follow the exact backwash or cleaning procedure. If pressure changed abruptly, use the high filter-pressure diagnostic. Material returning through the jets needs a filter and plumbing inspection, not more sanitizer.
The water number was incomplete or unreliable
A total-chlorine result is not a substitute for free chlorine; pH and cyanuric-acid use matter; test methods have limits. Use the green-pool/high-chlorine guide when the water’s appearance conflicts with the number.
The product expectation was wrong
“Shock” is not one universal chemistry or claim. EPA says a shock oxidizer that does not claim sanitizing or algae control should state that it is neither a sanitizer nor an algicide. Read the active ingredient, EPA registration, intended use, incompatibilities, and re-entry instructions on the exact label.
Do not make recurrence worse
- Do not stack sanitizer, algaecide, clarifier, acid, and oxidizer in one guessed sequence.
- Do not mix products or reuse a scoop, feeder, or container across incompatible chemicals.
- Do not use “chlorine lock,” “resistant algae,” or a color name as a diagnosis without evidence.
- Do not rely on a robotic cleaner as the only brush, filter, or sanitizer.
- Do not reopen because the water looks better while walls remain slippery or readings remain unverified.

No static product is recommended here because the correct water method, surface, filter identity, and product label must be known first. When to call a professional
Stop home troubleshooting for unsafe visibility, widespread slippery surfaces, suspected sewage or chemical contamination, a feeder or salt-generator fault, material returning through pool returns, a filter that cannot be safely depressurized or restored, or another recurrence after one fully documented water–surface–circulation–filter cycle. Surface damage or fixed stains also need identification before more aggressive brushing or chemistry.
