Persistent air bubbles from the pool return jets usually mean air is entering before or at the circulation pump. Start with the waterline and skimmer, then check baskets, a connected suction-cleaner hose, the pump-lid seal, accessible suction unions, and whether the pump is losing prime. Brief bubbles after opening the system—or bubbles from an enabled spa-air feature—are a different pattern.

Air in a filter is a safety issue

Manufacturer manuals warn that trapped, pressurized air can cause separation of a filter lid or tank. Do not open, tighten, or service a filter while the pump is running or the gauge shows pressure. Turn off power, prevent automation from restarting the pump, open the manual air relief only as directed, stand clear, and wait for zero pressure before permitted service.

First decide whether the bubbles are expected

  • Only from spa jets or when an air blower/venturi is on: this may be intentional. Confirm by switching the feature according to its manual.
  • A short burst after the pump or filter was opened: residual air may be clearing. It should not continue or accumulate.
  • Continuous bubbles during ordinary pool filtration: trace the suction side.
  • Bubbles only when a suction cleaner is connected: inspect hose sections, cuffs, the submerged connection, and the cleaner setup.
  • Bubbles plus an unstable water level under the pump lid: air entry or water starvation is likely.
  • Bubbles plus loss of prime: stop the pump and use the priming-failure sequence.

Trace the path without opening the filter

  1. Record when the bubbles appear. Note pump speed, selected valves, spa/air-feature state, suction-cleaner connection, water level, and whether the pump was recently opened.
  2. Watch the skimmer. A low waterline, stuck weir, or clogged basket can let the skimmer gulp air. Correct only after the pump is off when hands would be near suction.
  3. Remove the suction cleaner from the test. If the symptom disappears, inspect every hose section and cuff and verify that the vacuum connection stays submerged. Follow the cleaner manual.
  4. Observe the pump basket without opening it. A large or growing air pocket supports an upstream air path. A steady, water-filled basket with bubbles only at a spa jet points elsewhere.
  5. Power off, lock out automatic starts, and relieve pressure. Follow the equipment manuals. Confirm the gauge is at zero before opening the pump lid.
  6. Inspect the lid seal and accessible unions. Remove debris, check for cracks or deformation, and reinstall only as the manual directs. Use only the approved O-ring lubricant if specified.
  7. Restart and observe from a safe position. If air persists, prime is unstable, or the filter repeatedly accumulates air, stop and arrange professional suction-side diagnosis.

Where air commonly enters

Low water or skimmer starvation

Pentair’s system manual lists low water and a skimmer starved for water among common air-entry causes. The correct waterline depends on the skimmer and pool; restore the documented operating level instead of relying on a universal measurement.

Blocked baskets or a stuck skimmer weir

A leaf-loaded basket or door that cannot move freely restricts water reaching the pump. Storm debris can make the fault appear suddenly and may also raise energy use by increasing system resistance.

Suction-cleaner hose or connection leak

A split hose, loose cuff, or connection that reaches the surface can admit air. The Pentair Kreepy Krauly manual directs owners to check the hose, submerged vacuum connection, pump lid, and O-ring when a cleaner slows and bubbles enter at the returns.

Pump-lid or union seal

Debris on the O-ring seat, a worn seal, a cracked lid, or an improperly seated union can pull in air even without an obvious water leak. Match every replacement to the exact model, revision, and manufacturer part record.

Suction plumbing leak

If the accessible checks pass and air continues, a valve stem, fitting, or buried suction line may be leaking. Pressure and vacuum testing require appropriate equipment and training; do not improvise with compressed air.

Do not create a second air hazard

  • Do not open or loosen a filter while the system is pressurized.
  • Do not put hands near a skimmer, drain, pump basket, or impeller while power can return.
  • Do not use compressed air to pressure-test pool circulation equipment.
  • Do not over-tighten a lid or union when the manual specifies hand tightening.
  • Do not apply a household sealant or unapproved lubricant to an O-ring.
  • Do not keep running a pump that loses prime, overheats, or makes abnormal noise.
  • Do not buy a generic hose, lid, or O-ring without an exact compatibility record.

After the air is gone

If cloudy water accompanied the air fault, continue with what to test after shock. If the gauge rises instead of falling, use the high filter-pressure sequence. Restoring flow is necessary, but it does not by itself prove that water chemistry or clarity is safe.

When the air path leaves visible equipment

Call a qualified professional when the pump repeatedly loses prime, the filter accumulates air, a pipe or lid is cracked, a buried suction leak is possible, an accessible seal replacement does not solve the fault, or pressure/flow remains abnormal. Use a licensed electrician for wet wiring, repeated breaker trips, or an electrical concern. Stop operating the system if air, heat, leak, or noise worsens.
